Anxiety is a part of our nature.

Anxiety Therapy

Tired of feeling stressed out and anxious?

Anxiety stems from the universal need to feel safe and secure. Wired into our brains to detect danger and survive, anxiety keeps us alert and aware of our surroundings. But when anxiety becomes a chronic, relentless presence in our lives, it can be overwhelming, disruptive, and flat out exhausting.

Each of us is different and thus experiences anxiety differently. For some of us, a negative experience from the past has kept us feeling “stuck” and unable to focus on the present, hyper-aware at all times of what could go wrong. For others, anxiety cohabitates with other issues like ADHD, keeping us from staying clear and organized. In general, a sense of impending doom is felt, often manifesting in physical symptoms like chest heaviness, trouble breathing, and panic.

Anxiety doesn’t just affect us either—it has a way of casting ripples into every area of our lives and relationships, making us feel uncertain, on display, and incapable of concentrating on the here and now. Catastrophic thoughts and negative self-perceptions get in the way of living life to the fullest, and eventually, we’re at the perpetual mercy of an anxious mindset.

Yet, there is a root cause for your anxiety, which means there’s a viable path to relief. Together with your Hohm therapist, you can begin to untangle the origins of your anxiety, how it’s affecting you, and how to feel less directed by worried, fearful thinking.

You’re not alone

Our culture promotes a hustling, high-achieving mentality, making us incredibly vulnerable to feelings of inferiority. Add that to a sense of crisis that seems to be escalating around the globe on a daily basis, it makes perfect sense that we’re anxious. And while anxiety affects millions of people from a wide range of backgrounds, it’s important to combat the idea that living in constant fear and anguish is “normal” and something that must be tolerated indefinitely.

Of course, we can rationally understand that being constantly busy, productive, and preoccupied is unsustainable, but fear-based thinking is really good at overpowering our authentic desires and motivations. Underneath those fears is often a damaging experience that taught us to be hypervigilant and untrusting, sending our bodies into stress mode—often unconsciously—every time we perceive even the slightest threat. Fortunately, effective and lasting anxiety treatment exists.

Therapy allows you to take control of your daily experience. Because, as human beings, we are wired for connection, healing core wounds must be done in a safe, trusting relationship. Working with a therapist affords you a chance to reclaim a sense of balance, ease, and empowerment through emotional exploration and trauma-informed techniques.

Our approach

The entire therapeutic process through Hohm is catered to your goals and desires. After all, everyone’s experience with anxiety looks different—you may be seeking treatment for symptoms of post-traumatic stress, social anxiety, panic attacks, or anxiety related ADHD. The most important thing is meeting you where you are. Our therapists want to ensure you feel accepted in your experience of anxiety and validated for what you’ve been through.

Hohm means “Healing our hearts and minds,” so we will use tools like mindfulness and trauma-informed therapy to teach you to recognize triggers and manage anxiety. Our treatment plans are designed to be collaborative and flexible, so you can revise them as you make progress.

“I think trauma really does confront you with the best and the worst. You see the horrendous things that people do to each other, but you also see resilience, the power of love, the power of caring … And in some ways, I don’t think you can appreciate the glory of life unless you also know the dark side of life.” – Bessel van der Kolk

A big part of overcoming anxiety is understanding the protective purpose it serves. As your therapist supports you in exploring unresolved experiences of grief, trauma, and distress, you can uncover the deeper emotions and somatic response that has been stored in the body all this time. As trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk says, “The body keeps the score,” and anxiety is your body’s way of signaling that the nervous system is feeling overwhelmed and underprepared.

Using body-based methods like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), we can safely access and reprocess unresolved traumatic experiences. We will also use elements of attachment or emotion-focused therapy to help you create interactions with others and your environment that will promote feelings of security. And finally, we will welcome you home to your body through meditative exercises that will allow you to pause and ground yourself in the moment.

Many of our clients begin therapy with the idea that their anxiety is surface-level and, as such, only surface-level symptoms need to be addressed. But through validating therapeutic experiences with our skilled counselors, they have a chance to peel back the layers and understand that their anxiety runs far deeper than what they initially thought.

By teaching them to re-establish control over their nervous system and automatic stress response, we’ve helped our clients be more prepared, empowered, and self-assured to face all of life’s stressors—and we’re confident we can do the same for you.

Unsure if counseling is right for you?

  • First and foremost, anxiety is treatable. However, the goals for treatment may vary from person to person depending on the severity of their anxiety and how long they have struggled with symptoms. Some clients look to reduce anxiety entirely, while others seek out coping skills to manage their anxiety more easily. Regardless of what your goals for anxiety therapy are, any development of coping skills is a victory in and of itself.

  • Just as the experience of anxiety varies from person to person, so does the length of time spent in counseling. Some clients find the relief they’re looking for after a few sessions, while others have a more gradual healing process. Either way, we encourage you not to be critical of yourself. As long as you commit to the work and apply the strategies you learn in therapy, we are confident that you will gain control of your anxiety.

  • You will never be forced into anything during the treatment process—whether it involves sharing sensitive information or taking medication. Our therapists believe that in order for the therapeutic process to work, a sense of trust and security must be achieved. We are trained, empathetic clinicians committed to creating a therapeutic relationship that revolves around safety rather than obligation.

“Being able to feel safe with people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; Safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives.”

— Bessel van der Kolk
